Cleveland Browns players pay a special visit to Walton School
Children who achieve excellence do not just happen overnight. It takes years of support and encouragement from parents and teachers that help guide these young minds. On the top of the list as far as priorities is getting to school each and every day and actively participating in class. The Cleveland Metropolitan School District believes that this is so important that they have developed a program titled “Get 2 School, You Can Make It” that encourages perfect attendance. Sometimes special perks are arranged for those students who show outstanding initiative.
This past Tuesday students returning to school after the extended Labor Day weekend were surprised as two members of the Cleveland Browns as well as the Cleveland Browns official mascot, Chomps, paid a visit to Walton School on Cleveland’s west side. The two Cleveland Brown’s players participating were DL Larry Ogunjobi and DL Nate Orchard. The two current members of the Cleveland Browns Defense took their personal days off in order to visit and spent time telling how education and teachers played an important part in their lives.
Each group of students that met with the NFL players who are just days away from their opening season game on Sunday was given the opportunity to describe what factors let to them being excellent students after which they were allowed to ask either of the players a question.
After meeting with the various groups of students who each received an official Cleveland Browns Swag Bag, the players help host a school wide ice cream social as a way to congratulate them on their achievements. The visit is part of the Cleveland Browns First and Ten campaign in which #give10 is a crucial part. Throughout the year fans of the Cleveland Browns are encouraged to visit the official website (click on Community) and pledge 10 hours of volunteer work in their communities over the year’s time. Having completed their ten hours of community service they can then return to the site and share their experience.
The Cleveland Browns are the only NFL club who promote a long-term volunteering program that unifies the team with its entire fan base.
