Canton Charge unable to fight back against Greensboro Swarm

The Canton Charge (12-19), powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers ended in defeat against the Greensboro Swarm (10-21) as 2,901 fans looked on at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. The Greensboro’s win puts them on top of the season series having won two out of three meetings.
Tried as they might, Canton simply could not pull ahead with any significant lead and late in the third quarter were down by 19 points. With a combination of strong defense and accurate shooting they got to within four points with 3:29 remaining in the game. It was the Swarm’s Marcus Paige who hit for 11 points in the final 1:16 that sealed the victory for his team.
Greensboro controlled the paint, out-rebounding the Charge 49-39. The Swarm’s 15 offensive rebounds lead to a 22-8 advantage in second chance points on the evening. Despite being held to 41% shooting from the field, the Swarm was the aggressors, connecting on 23-of-27 free throw attempts (85%). The Charge was 12-of-16 at the charity stripe.
Making his first start after a brief stint off the bench, Charge guard Marcus Thornton posted a game-high 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-10 from three point range. The rest of the home team shot just 5-of-25 from three point distance.
Portland Trail Blazers’ assignee Caleb Swanigan recorded his ninth double-double of the season in 12 games played with 10 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes. Swanigan added a season-high four blocks to anchor the Charge defense. John Holland scored 11 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter. Cavalier’s assignee Ante Zizic scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
Greensboro was paced by forward Roscoe Smith’s 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting in 33 minutes of action. Mangok Mathiang recorded a double-double for the Charlotte Hornets’ affiliate with 14 points and 11 rebounds off of the bench. Paige added 19 points and eight assists in 32 minutes.
The Next home game for the Canton Charge will be on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 against their division rivals the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (Indiana Pacers). Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
