Canton Charge dominates over the Delaware Blue Jackets in third victory of the season

What do you get when you pit two evenly matched basketball teams against each other? You get some of the most exciting basketball of the season. The Canton Charge (19-10), powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, added on to their home record of 12-2 as they defeated the Delaware Blue Coats (16-12) by a score of 116-103.

Prior to the game the fans were asked for a moment of silence in memory of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and the eight victims that lost their lives in the tragic helecopter accident in southern California this past Sunday. As the game was begun, each team took a 24-second shot clock and an 8-second back court violation in tribute to their fallen comrade.

Once the game began it was business as normal with Malik Newman scoring 19 of his game high 27 points in the second half along with eight rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes of play. Sheldon Mac followed with 22 points and two steals in 28 minutes of relief. Dean Wade added 12 points and nine rebounds and Sir ‘Dominic Pointer roared off the bench for 14 points and four steals in 16 minutes.

Both teams were evenly matched through the first half shooting 22-of-49 or 45% but the difference of Canton’s starters hitting five threes to Delaware hitting zero from the arc gave the Charge a 54-49 advantage at the break. Canton kept the lead advantage clear through to the end of the game pulling ahead by as much as 17 points as they cruised to their third victory of the season over Delaware.

One of the many high points of the game came in the second half when Canton Charge Guard Sheldon Mac made a mid-court steal followed by a 360° spinning dunk that brought the crowd to their feet.

On the Blue Coat side of the ledger it was Marial Shayok scoring 20 points with nine rebounds in 31 minutes. Teammate Haywood Highsmith flew off the bench for 20 points with 7-of-11 shooting in 24 minutes of court time. Christ Koumadge earned a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds in 29 minutes.

The Canton Charge finish up their current homestand tomorrow, Friday, January 31, 2020 when they face the Windy City Bulls. It’s Replica Jersey Night with the first 2,000 fans scoring their own Canton Charge jersey courtesy of Dunkin’. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

The Canton Charge is part of the Cleveland Cavaliers organization and is also owned by a group led by Cavaliers Chairman and Quicken Loans Founder and Chairman Dan Gilbert. The group also owns and operates the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League, who play their games at Rocket Mortgage Field House in downtown Cleveland.
