The Con-Con production of “Macbitches” is epic

There is no doubt about it. Convergence Continuum and their audiences will wish this show was performed in a larger theater. “Macbitches” by Sophie Mcintosh is sure to be a huge hit with sell out performances throughout it’s run. It has everything...literally everything you could want in great theater.

Comedy...Drama...Tragedy...Shakespeare...Suspense...Heavy Drinking...Fighting...Blood...it has it all and then some.

At a fine arts college somewhere in America casting assignments have been made for the fall production of “The Scottish Play” with a few surprises. Freshman Hailey Hudson (Madeline Glya) has been cast as “Lady Macduff” over the statuesque and extremely talented Senior Rachel LaBeau (Madeline Jarosz). Hailey has made quick friends with Sophomore Piper Bell (Hannah Rutkowski) and Junior Cam Fletcher (Lorna Patterson) who along with Junior Lexi Lapp (Abbey Marshall) have been given minor parts in the epic Shakespearean work.

The girls gather at Rachel and Lexi’s apartment to celebrate. There is lots to drink including a half gallon of cheap Vodka, a yellow skull bottle of tequila and some kind of pink Macpunch in a crudely decorated water jug.

The evening begins cordially as everyone is excited about the play (except for Rachel) and mutual respect and bromance fills the air. The girls begin to gossip about others in the theater program as well as the musical theater program and of course the professors. It soon is noted that Lexi is enraged at Rachel not getting the plum part.

Cam and Piper are sad to be relegated to minor rolls and realize that no matter how much people encourage them they will be stuck in those rolls for their entire careers.

Piper comes from a deeply religious background and has probably never kissed much less “done it”. Hailey is an innocent who is beginning to understand the power her body has on male directors. Rachel hides her anger well up until the end.

After a few drinks they decide to play a game “Most Likely” with shots of Tequila from the yellow skull as the reward/punishment. Soon Hailey has reached the pass out state, Piper is convinced to meet a boy she really likes and “do the wild thing”. Cam takes over the bathroom. Alone with Hailey, Rachel and Lexi decide to play a serious prank on the unconscious girl. At this point the wheels come off the cart and a tragic scene unfolds. It is here that the show brilliantly ends.

This is ensemble acting at its best. Each and every person in this cast is perfectly suited for their roll personality wise. Madeline Glya as the wide eye innocent Hailey is cute as a button and well aware of her seductive powers. Madeline Jarosz as Rachel plays the femme fatale to a “T”. Lorna Patterson as Cam is brash and bold in her roll. Abbey Marshall as Lexi is exceptional as Rachel’s roommate/lover/friend and Hannah Rutkowski as Piper plays the part of peace maker and confidant extremely well. The show is brilliantly directed by Kate Smith. Robert Wachala does a superb job with the lighting design and most important is Emily Wirthwein as fight director.

Five female actors at a performing arts college with various strong and distinct personalities during a night of heavy drinking as jealousy rears its ugly head...what could possibly go wrong? Take my word for it...it does. This is 90 minutes of intense.
