Cleveland Browns host health and safety football clinic for moms

As part of their ongoing commitment to youth football in the Northeast Ohio area, the Cleveland Browns hosted their third annual health and safety football clinic for moms at the Cleveland Browns Training Complex in Berea, Ohio.

During the two hours of seminars, talks and hands on training the moms heard from a variety of speakers that included Michelle Jackson (wife of Head Coach Hue Jackson), Matt Wilhelm (former NFL player), Sara Carnes (Inside The Cleveland Browns co-host on 95.5 The Fish), Chuck Kyle (Cleveland Browns Youth Football Advisor and St. Ignatius Head Football Coach), Katy Meassick (Cleveland Browns Performance Dietician), Jamel White (Cleveland Browns alumni RB and NFL Ambassador), Dr. Weiss Kelly (University Hospital Physician) and Dr. Michael Salata (University Hospital Physician).

While the mom’s children (ages 6-14) participated in a rigorous round of Play 60 by participating in a series various football drills that were conducted in a fun environment. Cleveland Browns partner Arby’s provided food for the event and the clinic was presented by Purell. Following the event, the children all received special Cleveland Browns Swag Bags and souvenirs for their participating in the event followed by a group photo of moms and children.

The clinic is in response to Play Football Month in August as an emphasis on important health and safety issues were discussed during the open quorums. Topics covered included CDC approved concussion recognition and response protocols, proper equipment fitting, Heads Up tackling, Heads Up blocking, heat emergency preparedness and hydration as well as sudden cardiac arrest.

Following the various talks, the moms got to have some fun as they participated in a hands-on USE Football Heads Up Football tackling clinic put on by Cleveland Browns youth football advisor and legendary St. Ignatius Head Football Coach, Chuck Kyle (who also serves as a certified Master Trainer in the USA Football Program. The ladies learned basic proper blocking and tackling techniques then got to practice these new skills with various coaches.

During the month of August, all NFL teams participate in Play Football Month as they celebrate youth and high school football players and coaches. Starting with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio Play Football will recognize various youth and high school football activities, personnel and programming at their preseason games at stadiums across the country.

The Cleveland Browns have made a solid commitment to assist in the development, safety and growth of youth football throughout our area as they host year round programs for players, coaches, officials and parents throughout the region. It is through these clinics and camps the Cleveland Browns hope to promote a healthier, more social, emotionally sound and intellectually stimulating environment as well as developing physical prowess in the participating youth.

The Browns PLAY 60 movement, contributing to the NFL’s nationwide initiative to promote youth health and wellness by getting active at least 60 minutes each day, is in association with University Hospitals and American Dairy Association Mideast and Fuel Up to PLAY 60. Who is Mark Horning?

Over the course of my life I have worked a variety of jobs including newspapers, retail camera sales and photography. Eight years ago I embarked on yet another career as writer.
