Cleveland Charge puts brakes on Motor City Cruise in thrilling overtime opener
The contest started out slow as after over two minutes the score board read six to zero in favor of the Motor City Cruise. The red and gold got their measure and soon took the lead. Cleveland managed to stay a couple of points ahead into the fourth quarter where the lead changed back and forth until tying at the buzzer.
In a new NBA twist the first-ever target score was introduced. The first team to score seven points would win the contest. With the Cruise just two points shy of the win and the Charge trailing by one, Sam Merrill (#1 overall draft pick for 2022) hit a huge three pointer from the center of the arc for the win as the arena went ballistic. Final score 113-111 bringing to a close one of the most exciting evenings for the home team.
Top scorers for Cleveland included Sharife Cooper with a game high 28 points combined with a team high six assists in 35 minutes on the court. Jamorko Pickett earned a double-double of 21 points and 12 boards. Two-Way Player ISAIAH Mobley notched 19 points and six rebounds in his Cleveland debut while Didi Loouzada was good for 14 points and nine boards in 25 minutes off the bench.
For the Motor City team it was Braxton Key scoring an impressive double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds while Keifer Sykes earned a double-double of 20 points and 11 assists. Forward Devontae Cacok added 21 points and eight rebounds in 36 minutes.
The Cleveland Charge now heads out of town for their longest road trip of the season as they start with back-to-back games against the Wisconsin Herd (Milwaukee Bucks) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Fans can catch the action on ESPN+ or listen to live action on NEO Sports Radio on the iHeartRadio mobile app.
